Hack the Future Purdue ("HTF", "we") is a student organization at Purdue University. This policy explains what information this website collects, what happens when you write to us or apply to join, who processes it for us, and how to reach us about it. It is written in plain language on purpose.
What this policy covers
This policy covers:
- this website, the pages you are reading now;
- email you send us through the addresses on the Contact and Nonprofits pages;
- the application form linked from the Apply page, as far as what we do with the answers.
It does not cover other websites we link to, such as Instagram, LinkedIn or the nonprofits we work with. Those sites have their own policies.
Information we collect
When you visit the site
The site uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies and does not track you across other sites: it records the page visited, the referring site, and coarse device and location information (browser, operating system, country), and identifies a visit for the day with a hash that is not stored for longer. We do not run advertising trackers, and the site sets no cookies of its own.
Our hosting provider, Vercel, keeps standard server logs to run and secure the service: the IP address, browser type, pages requested and timestamps. We do not use these logs to identify individual visitors.
When you email us
This website has no contact form. If you email us, we receive what you send: your email address, your name if you sign it, and the message. We use it only to read and answer your message. Your email provider and ours handle delivery under their own policies: ours is a Gmail account, so Google receives and stores what you send us.
When you apply to join HTF
Applications are collected through a Google Form. Google processes the form and stores the responses under Google's privacy policy; the form itself may ask you to sign in to a Google account.
The answers we receive are your name, your contact details, your year and major, links you choose to share (LinkedIn, portfolio), the roles you apply for and your answers to the application questions. Exec board members read them to run recruitment and write internal notes about applications. Those notes are never shared with applicants or third parties.
How we use it
We use the information above to:
- answer your messages;
- run recruitment: review applications, schedule interviews and tell you the outcome;
- keep the site secure and working;
- keep simple aggregate numbers, for example how many people applied in a cycle.
We do not sell personal information and we do not use it for advertising.
Who processes it for us
We use a small number of services to run the site. Each processes data on our behalf under its own terms:
- Vercel hosts the website, keeps server logs and provides the page-view analytics.
- Google runs the application form, stores its responses, and carries our email (Gmail).
We do not share personal information with anyone else, except when the law requires it or to protect the safety of our members.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us at any time to:
- tell you what information we hold about you;
- correct it;
- delete it, unless we need to keep it for a legal reason;
- withdraw an application.
Email us (see below) and we will reply within a reasonable time.
Security
Access to applications and email is limited to the exec board members who need it. The services above use encryption in transit (HTTPS) and, for stored data, at rest. No system is perfectly secure, so if you believe your information has been exposed, tell us and we will investigate.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we update the text on this page.
